Block patient from appointment if they haven't paid invoice

Is there a reason providers are unable to see whether an invoice has been created and whether it is paid or unpaid? In our office, providers currently have access to this information. We also have our providers process the patient’s card at the beginning of the appointment so they can immediately address any issues and request a new card if needed.
Previously, our front office staff handled payments and tried to catch patients before or during the appointment, but we found it more efficient for providers to process payments themselves at the start of the visit.
